Giostra del Saracino Arezzo

Within the framework of historical re-enactments, of which central Italy is rich, is the Giostra del Saracino. Reintroduced as a historical re-enactment in 1931, the Giostra del Saracino is run in Arezzo in the Piazza Grande on the third Saturday of June in the night edition and on the first Sunday of September in the day edition. The four quarters of the city compete in the joust: Quartiere di Porta del Foro, Quartiere di Porta Crucifera, Quartiere di Porta Sant'Andrea and the Quartiere di Porta Santo Spirito. Each knight rides the lizza according to the order established by the drawing of the chariots, a ritual that takes place in the Piazza del Comune a week before the Joust. The knight carries a lance with which he must hit the board supported by the buratto, a wooden statue representing the Saracen (hence the name). The score is between one and five points; each district runs twice until, sometimes resorting to a tie-breaker, one district prevails over the others.

Every first Sunday of the month and the preceding Saturday, the 'Antique Fair' is held in the streets of the historic centre and in Piazza Grande, born in 1968 from an idea of the Arezzo antiquarian historian Ivan Bruschi. On 9, 10 and 11 September each year, the 'September Fair' (Fiera del Mestolo) is held. The last week in August, the Concorso polifonico Guido d'Arezzo, an international competition dedicated to Guido Monaco in which choirs from all over the world participate, has been held since 1952. The competition is a stage of the European Grand Prix of Choral Singing that is held periodically in Arezzo about every six years. In the autumn, the International Festival "I Grandi Appuntamenti della Musica" takes place, organised by the Ente Filarmonico Italiano with the patronage of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and the contribution of the main local authorities. The city's own festivals are those of the patron saint San Donato, on 7 August, and that of the Madonna del Conforto on 15 February. Blessed Gregory X, co-patron saint of the city, is celebrated on 10 January.
